Ransomware Data Recovery

When bad actors bring your business operations to a standstill, the difference isn’t tools: it’s expertise under pressure. For more than two decades, Gillware’s engineers have solved the hardest data recovery challenges, rebuilding what others have considered lost. From failed decryptors to shattered file systems, we create solutions in real time to get your data, your business, and your sanity back.

Ransomware attacks don’t just lock your data — they disrupt operations, threaten livelihoods, and put critical outcomes at risk. From small businesses to government agencies, the impact can be immediate and severe, especially when systems become inaccessible and time is working against you.

At Gillware, our engineers specialize in solving complex data loss scenarios, and that same expertise applies directly to encrypted, corrupted, and partially destroyed systems.

Ransomware doesn’t behave like typical data loss. Primary and backup servers may be encrypted, file systems damaged, or critical metadata overwritten, making data appear completely gone even when large portions still exist. In many cases, even when a ransom is paid, attackers’ decryptors fail — leaving businesses with no clear path forward.

That’s where Gillware is different. We don’t rely solely on existing tools or standard processes. Our team includes reverse engineers and software developers who can analyze encryption behavior, rebuild damaged structures, and even build custom solutions when needed.

When everything looks lost, we focus on what’s still possible — working methodically to recover, rebuild, and restore the data that matters most.

To be clear about what that work is: Gillware recovers the storage, not the encryption. We do not break or bypass modern encryption, and no lab can promise to. What we recover is everything the attack did not fully destroy — files the malware skipped or only partially encrypted, deleted originals that still exist on the disk, earlier versions in snapshots and shadow copies, damaged file systems and volumes that can be rebuilt, and the data behind a decryptor that ran and failed. Where a question of evidence or chain of custody exists, our digital forensics and incident-response lane works alongside the recovery.

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is malware that denies access to files on your computer, mobile device, or network by encrypting them or making them otherwise inaccessible, and demands that payment be made in order to regain access. It works by first going through and either encrypting or deleting all the important files it can find, often sabotaging any accessible backups. If the ransom isn’t paid within the specified timeframe, a decryption key may never be provided, leaving the data effectively lost.

If your backup set was the target

Modern attacks go after the backups first: the repository volume is wiped or encrypted, retention points and snapshots are deleted, or an immutable-storage setting turns out not to have been immutable. When the backup software can no longer see its own chain, the data is often still on the underlying storage — the repository disk or NAS volume, the hypervisor datastore, the virtual disk files, or tape. Recovery works from that layer, not from the software. What to do right now: power the repository down or take it offline, do not re-run backup jobs into it, do not reformat or re-initialize the repository, and do not let the vendor’s consistency or rebuild wizard rewrite the chain.

We work the raw file sets for the common suites and platforms: Veeam backup file corruption and Veeam backups that have become unavailable, VHDX virtual disks and Hyper-V checkpoint chains, and VMware datastores and VMDK files. Advanced casework of this kind is quoted hourly after a free evaluation, so you know the cost before any recovery work begins.
