Hard Drive Recovery

Hard drive data recovery is a common data recovery service we provide, and we can assist with internal and external solid-state drives and disk drives of any manufacturer. Hard drive data recovery services can be completed on-site at Micro Center as long as the hard drive is somewhat functional. In some more serious hard drive data recovery cases, the hard drive will need to be shipped to Gillware’s data recovery laboratory. Additionally, we can repair all operating systems and brands of laptops and PCs, and Micro Center is an Authorized Service Provider for Apple, Dell, HP, ASUS, Acer, Lenovo, and PowerSpec.

How We Perform Data Recovery in Columbus, OH

When you drop off or bring your device to Micro Center for data recovery services, a real Gillware data recovery technician will perform an evaluation of your data loss situation and determine whether a successful recovery is possible. Gillware’s experienced engineering and equipment is available right inside the Micro Center service desk!

The device suffering from data loss is then attached to Gillware’s proprietary data recovery hardware and software, and evaluated by an expert with tens of thousands of hours of data recovery experience! Once Gillware’s data recovery specialists recover data from your devices, we will transfer your recovered data to the media device of your choice.

Can It Be Recovered In-Store?

While most of the time, Gillware’s data recovery specialists will be able to retrieve your important data at the Micro Center store in Columbus, OH. In some extreme data loss cases, particularly those involving heavy physical damage or electrical damage, your data recovery advisor will recommend that the device be sent to Gillware’s clean room lab for data recovery.

Gillware’s proprietary software and expertise allow us to provide local Columbus data recovery services for customers. Our in-house data recovery lab in Columbus, OH allows us to keep costs low and offer our world-class data recovery services for a fraction of what other data recovery companies charge. We provide data recovery services for a variety of different data loss situations and device types, and our secure data recovery service keeps your sensitive data confidential; we take data security seriously.

Whether it be deleted data on a solid-state drive, a chipped SD card, a clicking hard drive, or a flash drive that got snapped in half, Gillware services them all. In many cases, we are able to salvage data and get clients their recovered files even when other recovery labs cannot.

Speciality Data Recovery Equipment

Why do you choose a professional data recovery lab? Because we have the data recovery tools and the know-how to do things no one else can.

Platter Burnishing

Unlike in modern solid-state hard drives, all the data in a spinning-disk hard drive is stored on hard disk platters. In cases where a spinning-disk hard drive is damaged, the read/write heads that are supposed to float above the platters to read the data on the disk can instead crash into the platter and damage the data. When this happens, the platter can be damaged beyond the ability to recover data even when a new headstack is installed on the drive. A platter can be coated with debris from being scraped and scratched, not to mention the scratches themselves can make the data unreadable.

However, Gillware has proprietary platter burnishing equipment to polish the damaged disk back into a readable state. This technology enables us to restore the hard drives’ surfaces so that a replacement set of read/write heads can their data.

Parts Library

Additionally, Gillware’s data recovery lab boasts a massive inventory of spare and replacement parts. This means that if our in-store Micro Center data recovery technicians can’t help because the equipment is faulty, it’s likely our experienced engineers can recover your data once we replace the damaged part with a spare from our library.

Clean Room Environment

Our ISO 5 Class 100 clean room environments are perfectly designed to allow us to recover your data without causing further damage to the device. Our clean room lab prevents microscopic particles from destroying the data stored on your device – one reason we recommend that you don’t attempt to recover your data at home by opening damaged hard drives’ cases to get a peek inside at what’s going wrong. Doing this can prevent you from ever being able to recover the data from your device.

Secure Data Destruction Equipment

Gillware takes secure data recovery seriously. Because anyone can suffer from a data loss situation, we must be able to securely store PCI-compliant data, HIPAA-protected data, and other highly sensitive secure data recovery scenarios.

Any hard drives or storage at Gillware that hold client data are completely sanitized between data recovery jobs. With our sanitization method, the chance that anyone other than the client could get access to their own information is zero.

Whenever data has been delivered to a customer, we sanitize and watermark the drive, then log the record of successful data destruction in our CRM.

The process works like this: first, the engineer merely inserts the drive into our drive sanitizer. The sanitizer identifies the drive by serial number and cross-checks the CRM to see whose data is stored on it. Then, the sanitizer confirms before it destroys the data (to prevent customers who haven’t received their data yet from losing it). Once confirmed, each sector on the drive is securely overwritten in a process that can take about a day, though the timeframe depends on the drive’s storage size.

Once complete, the drive is removed from the machine and placed back into circulation in our data recovery lab, completely free of any data.

Specialty Data Recovery Software

If a data recovery technician hopes to recover data from a failed storage device, they need specialty forensic imaging software and equipment in order to clone all readable data that can be accessed to healthy data storage before attempting to analyze and extract it.

At Gillware, we developed a proprietary forensic imaging software and hardware solution called “Hombre.” This fault-tolerant forensic imaging equipment is incredibly powerful, allowing us to piece together file system data while imaging the damaged storage devices. We utilize a specialty hardware driver that allows read access, but not write access, so we don’t render data inaccessible by accidentally changing it in the process of imaging it. And this special hardware and software is available right inside Micro Center!

The intelligent, fault-tolerant forensic images generated by Hombre make it possible for us to recover large amounts of data that may otherwise have been unreadable.

A repaired hard drive almost never works as expected and can sometimes cause serious problems for a data recovery tech. For example, a drive may be technically working, but only able to read a sector or two a minute. Most OSes will not be able to access a drive like this. In other cases, a drive might take far too long to report as ready in the BIOS, making it so the OS doesn’t recognize it.

Hombre does not fall prey to such shortcomings. Hombre was built to work around and overlook problems in data storage, allowing us to access and use devices that other software would simply not touch. This allows us to image data storage devices that seem inaccessible, even after repairs have been made.
