Beeping Hard Drive Data Recovery

When the hard drive in your PC or the external hard drive on your desk starts beeping, its data can still be salvaged. with the help of a professional data recovery lab.

You may try to boot up your computer one day, only to be met with an error message telling you that your computer cannot find a device to boot from.

You pull out the hard drive, and when you try to power it on your worst fears are confirmed. The hard drive doesn’t spin up.

You can’t hear the happy “click” that comes when the read/write heads unpark and position themselves over the platters (this is the “good” click, as opposed to the notorious “click of death”).

Instead, your hard drive makes an unusual and repetitive beeping noise.

Hard disk drives make all sorts of noises, varying between brands and models. This is to be expected from devices with so many moving parts.

Most of these noises are perfectly normal, although some unusual noises may hint at a problem with the drive.

Some models of hard drives vibrate excessively compared to others and produce loud noises. This can worry their owners—even though the drives are functioning precisely as intended.

For example, some enterprise-class hard drives, meant to run in large servers, imitate the sound of a lawnmower to a T. Other models of hard drives have audible quirks of their own. Some Maxtor hard drives are infamous for making curiously musical sounds when they start to run into problems.

Of all the noises hard drives make, the repetitive ones tend to be the most obvious bearers of bad news, whether it’s clicking or beeping. Your hard drive making the same noise over and over again at regular intervals means that it’s trying and failing to do something—and it doesn’t know how to stop.

Why Do Hard Drives Beep?

Over time, lubricated bearings in your hard drive, which counteract the effects of friction on the motor, can dry up. This exposes the motor to unbearable amounts of friction, which can cause the motor to seize up.

When you power on the hard drive and send electricity through the control board to the spindle motor, the motor tries to run. This produces the feeble beeping you hear.

The hard drive’s read/write heads can also prove a culprit in these situations. If something happens to the hard drive—like a sudden shock, or an unexpected loss of power—the heads, which normally float a scant few nanometers away from the platter surfaces, can crash onto the hard disk platters.

This can cause scratching and scoring on the platter surfaces, and often mangles the read/write heads, rendering them inoperable. It also locks the platters in place and stops the motor from spinning them.

The spindle motor still tries to spin the platters, but with the read/write heads stuck on them, they won’t budge. The motor’s struggle causes your hard drive to beep.

Usually, the motor itself still functions, but continuing to run the drive can force the motor to burn itself out.

How Gillware Repairs Beeping Hard Drives

When you’ve got a beeping hard drive on your hands, it has to go to a cleanroom for data recovery.

In our modular ISO-5 Class 100 cleanroom workstations, our hard drive repair engineers can safely repair broken hard drives without worrying about foreign contaminants getting into the drives and ruining them.

If you have a beeping hard drive, it’s time to stop panicking. The data recovery experts at Gillware are here for you.

A beeping hard drive usually needs its read/write heads replaced.

When the heads slam into platters spinning at 5,400 or 7,200 RPM, they rarely escape unscathed. Often the heads have been rendered completely inoperable, and can even be mangled by the crash.

The hard disk platters holding your data can also have chunks of their magnetic coating gouged away by the impact. This can cause irreversible data loss on some parts of the disk.

Our hard drive repair engineers must search our donor library for a compatible set of read/write heads to put in your beeping hard drive. This is harder than it sounds.

Hard drives are very finicky and don’t like having other drives’ parts inside them, even drives of the same model. It can take several tries to find a set of heads that works.

If the motor has completely failed, our engineers must deal with that as well. Our engineers must use a compatible donor to replace the failed hard drive spindle motor and get the platters spinning again.

If the platters have sustained damage, our engineers need to burnish them in order to make data recovery possible.

Other data recovery labs do not have platter burnishing technology  They typically pronounce drives with scratched platters unsalvageable. This technology allows our engineers to recover data from scratched platters.

We know this because we often successfully recover data from these very same drives when their owners send them to our lab for a second opinion!

Gillware: Your Best Choice for Beeping Hard Drive Recovery

Not all hard drive noises are good, and some of the noises hard drives make are downright evil. Clicking and beeping are two of the most common noises you don’t want to hear coming from your drive.

Unfortunately, once you’ve started hearing these noises, it’s already too late for your hard drive. Your poor hard disk drive is, as the saying goes, pining for the fjords. Power down the drive and avoid the temptation to turn it back on. You won’t be able to mount the drive or access its data anyway. But of course, that’s not the whole story.

Your hard drive may be dead and gone—but your data isn’t. When your hard drive starts beeping, bring it to Gillware Data Recovery. Our expert engineers can salvage the lost data from your beeping hard drive. Whether your looking for a mission-critical Quickbooks file or years’ worth of family photos. Simply contact one of our recovery client advisers to set the recovery process in motion.

Gillware Data Recovery offers world-class data recovery services at affordable prices. We never charge you for evaluations of your failed hard drive, and we only move forward with your case if the price quote works for you.
