Why Do Hard Drives Beep?
Of all the noises hard drives make, the repetitive ones tend to be the most obvious bearers of bad news, whether it’s clicking or beeping. Your hard drive making the same noise over and over again at regular intervals means that it’s trying and failing to do something—and it doesn’t know how to stop.
A beeping hard drive usually has a problem with its spindle motor preventing it from working. The spindle motor inside your hard drive is supposed to spin the hard disk platters containing your data at thousands of revolutions per minute. But things can always go wrong.
Over time, the lubricated bearings which counteract the effects of friction on the motor can dry up. This exposes the motor to unbearable amounts of friction, which can cause the motor to seize up. When you power on the hard drive and send electricity through the control board to the spindle motor, the motor tries to run. This produces the feeble beeping you hear.
The hard drive’s read/write heads can also prove a culprit in these situations. If something happens to the hard drive—like a sudden shock, or an unexpected loss of power—the heads, which normally float a scant few nanometers away from the platter surfaces, can crash onto the hard disk platters. This can cause scratching and scoring on the platter surfaces, and often mangles the read/write heads and renders them inoperable. It also locks the platters in place and stops the motor from spinning them.
The spindle motor still tries to spin the platters, but with the read/write heads stuck on them, they won’t budge. The motor’s struggle causes your hard drive to beep. Usually, the motor itself still functions, but continuing to run the drive can force the motor to burn itself out.
