February Winner
This is Rainbow, and this is one of the most important pictures you recovered from my crashed hard drive. Rainbow died in August 2003 of feline diabetes; she was a few months short of 12 years old. Her struggle was long and valiant and full of dignity, but she finally lost her fight. Rainbow was far more than a pet to me. She was one of my best friends. We grew up together. I'd had her more than 1/3 of my life and for pretty much all of my adult life. What made her so special was her quiet strength and perseverance. Rainbow was with me through an abusive marriage, an ugly divorce, a court battle for her custody. She lived with me in six different houses, in three different states. She was my silent companion and a source of great comfort. She was such a character. The cat _never_ walked on the floor. She was so graceful, and she'd sail from piece of furniture to piece of furniture without ever knocking down a single thing. She was the softest animal I've ever touched. Her fur was like down. She never said "meow" in her entire life. Rainbow said "Murph". Had she been a male, that would have been her name. She was very special to me, and this picture is very special to me. This is the _only_ picture in existence that has both Rainbow and me together. I was always the one behind the camera, so I didn't get any pictures with her. Thank you so much for saving Rainbow for me. I couldn't bear the thought of losing her a second time. Thank you, Laura Familia Past Winners
